A California executive has not had a real day off in years. Work follows him home, his relationships feel more distant than they used to, and rest no longer seems to restore him.

In private, he may wonder whether this is simply the cost of success—or whether stress, anxiety, burnout, or an unhealthy coping pattern has begun to take over.

If any part of this feels familiar, you are not alone.

Many accomplished people become skilled at carrying pressure quietly—until the cost becomes harder to ignore.

The strengths that helped you succeed—self-reliance, persistence, high standards, and the ability to perform under pressure—can sometimes make it harder to notice when stress, anxiety, substance use, or relationship strain need attention.

If work pressure has begun to affect your sleep, health, relationships, mood, or use of alcohol, medication, or other coping behaviors, therapy can offer a private place to understand what is happening and decide what kind of support would help.

When Coping Becomes Private

Whether you lead a hospital department, a growing company, a medical practice, a law firm, or a major team, you may carry decisions that affect other people’s livelihoods, health, finances, or futures.

Over time, that level of responsibility can wear down even the coping strategies that have worked for you in the past.

Executive coaching can be valuable for leadership strategy, communication, decision-making, and professional goals.

Therapy serves a different purpose. It is clinical care for concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, compulsive behavior, and relationship distress. When stress becomes chronic, people often look for ways to shut off, sleep, escape, or feel temporarily in control.

That may include alcohol, misusing medications, stimulants, pornography, sexual behavior, compulsive work, or other patterns that bring short-term relief but create longer-term consequences.

When Stress Starts Changing How You Cope.

The World Health Organization describes burnout as an occupational phenomenon that results from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.

Burnout can show up as

Exhaustion

Irritability

Reduced Concentration

Growing Detachment from Work

Trouble Sleeping

The sense that you are operating on autopilot

For some high-achieving professionals, alcohol, stimulants, prescription medication, pornography, sexual behavior, or overwork can gradually become a primary way to decompress or avoid difficult feelings.

When a behavior starts to feel necessary to sleep, relax, cope, or get through the next day—and when it begins affecting your health, relationships, finances, judgment, or work—it deserves thoughtful clinical attention.

I help professionals understand and address addictive or compulsive patterns in a private outpatient setting. Care is confidential within the limits of California law, and treatment can be tailored to your clinical needs, schedule, and level of support required.

The isolation that comes with authority

Leadership can make it difficult to know where you can speak honestly. Colleagues may depend on you, employees may look to you for steadiness, and family members may already be carrying the effects of your stress. Over time, that can create a loneliness that is easy to hide and difficult to talk about.

Therapy offers a place where you do not have to manage anyone else’s reaction, protect your image, or have the answers.

When your title becomes your identity

Therapy can give you room to separate your worth from your role—to remember that a difficult quarter, complaint, case, mistake, or professional setback does not define your entire identity.

Therapy is Not Coaching

Executive coaching can support leadership development, strategy, accountability, communication, and career goals.

It is not psychotherapy, and it is not designed to assess or treat mental-health conditions, trauma, addiction, or relationship distress.

Therapy for executives and other high-responsibility professionals is still therapy: it is clinical care provided by a licensed clinician.

It focuses on the concerns that may sit beneath performance problems, including anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, compulsive behavior, burnout, and relationship strain.

If stress, mental-health symptoms, substance use, or a private coping pattern is beginning to affect your judgment, relationships, health, professional role, or ability to function, clinical support may be more appropriate than coaching alone.

How We Work

I use evidence-based approaches that are structured, practical, and tailored to your goals. Therapy moves at a pace that supports meaningful progress while respecting the complexity of your history, responsibilities, and current circumstances:

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

A structured, evidence-based trauma therapy that may help process distressing experiences, critical incidents, and memories that continue to affect your emotions, body, relationships, or sense of safety. Learn more about the benefits of EMDR.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

A practical approach for identifying the thought patterns and behaviors that maintain anxiety, perfectionism, overwork, avoidance, and unhealthy coping habits.

Addiction, compulsive sexual behavior, and betrayal-trauma support

Specialized therapy to address substance use, compulsive sexual behavior, infidelity-related concerns, disclosure-related stress, and the impact these patterns may have on partners and families. Treatment can focus on accountability, emotional regulation, relapse prevention, healthier coping, and rebuilding trust where appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your privacy is not an afterthought, but a crucial aspect of my practice. The private-pay nature of therapy means that no insurance is involved in billing from this practice for your therapy sessions.

This may lead to less disclosure of treatment data in the insurance claims process. Therapy documentation is managed in a secure and private manner as per all legal and professional privacy requirements, except when there are specific exceptions which we will discuss as part of the informed consent process.

Privacy concerns, along with concerns about licensure and one’s professional reputation, are natural concerns for physicians, executives, and other professionals. We can discuss these issues in the context of confidentiality, documentation, telepsychiatry privacy, etc., in the consultation process.

Executive therapy and therapy for other professionals with high responsibilities takes into account the same underlying clinical issues as any therapy, but it also takes into account the unique challenges of being a leader, which include the challenges of being visible, isolated, making critical decisions, having a busy schedule, facing professional scrutiny, and looking composed.

Confidential Therapy for Compulsive Sexual Behavior and Infidelity:

Your problems with coping can sometimes reach a stage at which they start becoming problematic, such as with the use of drugs and alcohol, overwork, pornography/sex, or other behaviors that are creating difficulties for you emotionally, relationally, professionally or financially.

This isn’t about making you feel guilty; it is about helping you understand what the coping problem is doing for you, and how it is hurting you. I am trained as a CSAT and multiple addiction therapist (CMAT).

Teletherapy may prove to be an effective and private solution for you. The therapy sessions will be held using a HIPPA-compliant platform developed for the purpose of conducting health care sessions, and there are ways to make sure that you set up as private a place as possible for your sessions.

You can participate in sessions from your office, home, or any other private place within California.

The point is reached where you begin to rely more and more on drinking, stimulants, or compulsive behaviors simply because it seems like the only thing that will put you to sleep, relax you, or get you through the next day.

There is no need to wait for the crisis to seek professional help and advice. It is better to solve this problem earlier rather than later to protect all that is dear to you—health, family, job, and sanity.

The process depends upon your problem, the duration for which you have had this problem, and what you want to achieve from it. Some patients begin to experience relief, clarity of mind, or sense of control from the very early sessions.

More severe problems, such as trauma, addictions, anxiety, betrayal, and patterns of relationships, might need a longer duration of therapy.

We shall clearly define our objectives at the start of the therapy, and then we shall continually evaluate what is working in favor of our objective.
